Regatta Week Report

Published 14:48 on 4 Aug 2022

For this year's Week the weather was thankfully much more co-operative than last with sailing races held on all 5 days, although on "Stormy Sunday" races did not count towards the Points Series as wind strengths were borderline for some of the participants. Results for Class 1, Class 2, "Stormy Sunday", and our "Most improved" sailors are given below. There's also links to see all the photos.

The Social programme was also blessed with warm and sunny weather for the supper cycle to Birdham, the Barbecue on the Hard, and the Croquet.

Many thanks to the many members who volunteered to help us run all these events. There are too many names to mention everyone but here are a few:

  • Ivan Western & Anne Rutherford (with Stuart Roy on Stormy Sunday) - Race Team for the Week.
  • Mark Chilton, Chris & Oscar Gorton, Julian Hall, Jonathan Macfarlane, John Watts, and Moira Penney in our 3 Safety Boats. Mark Chilton also lent his RIB to the Club for the week.
  • Roger & Valerie Bird for the Croquet.

The photo above shows Ivan and Anne on Committee in a brief interlude between the 2 races held on Monday.

The Racing

Class 1

34 boats entered at least one of the races in the Class 1 Series. 20 of these were Lasers and 5 were 2000s. Five races were held with the best 4 results to count. Prizes were awarded to the first 5 boats overall, to the first 4 Lasers, and to the first 2 2000s.

The overall winner was Kevan Watkins sailing a Laser Radial with four 1st places who therefore takes the Class 1 RW Cup. Kevan was also first Laser so also wins the Western Laser Trophy.

Jem & Nancy Western won the Peter Woods Cup for the first 2000. You can see all the results here.

Class 2

18 boats competed in at least one race of the Class 2 series for which 4 races were held. This meant the best 3 results counted.

The overall winners were Nina Haigh and Marit McKerchar with three 1st places who therefore take the Class 2 RW Cup.

You can see all the results here.

Stormy Sunday

Three races were run in this separate mini-series with the two best results counting. 14 boats took part and the overall winner was Alfred Western sailing a Laser 4.7 who tied with Will Dodd on points but took the prize on count-back. You can see all the results here.

Personal Handicaps and "most improved" sailors

Over the course of the Regatta we tracked how each boat's starting personal handicap (or Personal Portsmouth Yardstick Number, PPYN) changed. The outcome is shown in the 2 Tables below for Classes 1 and 2. The "Rank" shows the boat's finishing position based on it's personal handicap over the series. The 2 winning boats are highlighted.

Class 1 Improvement Table (shown in order of % improvement)

Class 2 Improvement Table (shown in order of % improvement)

A prize was awarded to Katherine & Howard Cook (Class 1) and Roz Haynes and Clare Benda (Class 2) as the 2 boats not otherwise winning awards and whose PPYN had improved most over the Regatta, We will use the final PPYNs as the start point for next year's Regatta.

The Socials

On Friday evening 40 members had spent a lovely evening at the Boat House Café, many having cycled there along the Saltern's Way.

Then on Saturday evening the Club hosted a BBQ for a large number of members on the Hard.

The Regatta Week Croquet match was held on Monday evening with competitors arriving for the game fresh of the race course. Nigel Haigh and Louise McKerchar took the honours.
