Applying for Membership
West Wittering Sailing Club welcomes applications from residents of the village who are interested in sailing or other on-the-water activities. A condition of our lease means we cannot accept applications from those who don't have a residential address in the parish. This means an address in the parish that is "used primarily for occupation by you and your family".
The Club is close to its capacity both in terms of the places on our junior training programmes and the storage of members' boats. In order to manage this we no longer accept applications for full membership throughout the year but instead have an annual new member intake each December before the new membership year starts. This means all those wishing to join for the following year must submit their application at the very latest by mid-November in the preceding year. Under some circumstances applicants who miss this deadline may be considered for Temporary Memberships but this is entirely at the discretion of the Committee and any membership offered may come with constraints.
The steps to become a member
PLEASE NOTE: The deadline for applying for 2025 Full Membership closes on November 11 2024
These are set out in the 2025 Membership Application details and are summarised below
- Contact the Club Secretary setting out your interest so we can arrange for you to meet a member of our committee informally. This is to allow us to explain the nature of our Club and for you to let us know what your aims are in joining. We are a small Club with limited facilities and want to be sure from the outset there are no misconceptions on either side. We are looking for residents who want to join a Club in which they become fully involved over a period of time, not those who just want occasional access to a water sports activity centre or to join a particular event we run during the season.
- Assuming you decide to apply, the next step is to submit the online Club application form to the Club Secretary. As explained above, your application must reach us by mid-November in the year preceding the January when you wish to join. The questions in this online Form are set our in our 2025 Membership Application details (which also include a link to the online Form). November 11 is the last date we will accept applications for 2025.
- The Committee will consider all applications received at its end of the year meeting and take its decision on each bearing in mind the capacity remaining at the Club for the season ahead. We aim to let all applicants know the result before the end of December.
It is the Club's policy to charge new full memberships a one-off Joining Fee (set at twice the annual subscription) in addition to the normal annual subscription. Given the relatively high fixed costs of running the Club we are looking for a commitment from those joining rather than a membership you can drop in and out of each year.
The different types of membership and the current charges are provided in the online Form and are summarised below. To become a member you will also need to sign on to our Membership Conditions.
