Junior Week, Barn Dance & Family Regatta Report

Published 09:33 on 25 Aug 2022

Junior week, the highlight of our junior programme, was again split into two parts this year and ran over 9 days. However we didn't forget our other Club members and held our Summer Barn Dance Party and the new "All club" Family Regatta at the midway weekend. You can read all about them below.

We have been sent lots of photos of the action and these have been uploaded to our Gallery pages and to Albums on the Club's OneDrive. Be warned, the pages may take a while to load as there are lots of photos!

For the first time for several seasons, the weather enabled junior sailing every single day and, as you can see from the photos, conditions for the Family Regatta sailing, swimming and kayak racing could not have been better.

JW Part 1 Report

33 kids aged 7-13 years took part in Junior week Part 1 in Optimists and SailQubes. They enjoyed 4 days of sailing in glorious sunshine during the recent heatwave. The race group completed 7 races with Oscar Mills (below) a deserving winner, followed in second place by Oscar Gorton, with Ethan Shaer coming in third. Full results available here

All of the groups enjoyed lots of time on the water with sailing drills and games.

The sailing was followed by evening socials, enjoyed by juniors and parents alike.

Barn Dance

After a 2 year gap it was wonderful to run this event again and see so many members, young and old enjoying themselves on a balmy summer evening where the Memorial Hall was transformed into a barn on a mid-western cattle ranch!

Family Regatta

This began with an "average lap race" with 24 boats racing each other around a circuit just off East Head. In wind of variable direction and strength the Scows had a good day taking 3 of the first four places but none were able to out sail Keith Russell (below) in his Supernova (but without his dog!) who led the fleet completing 4 laps and winning overall. After Keith the 3 Scows were Roger Mavity & Ginny Russell (2nd), Ann Carnegie and grandchildren Isla and Freddie as crew (3rd), and 4th Jac Mavity crewed by sister Aline.

As well as some first time racers, it was great to see lots of juniors entering. The first of these was Sam Holben, followed by Isla Edward (8th & 9th overall in Toppers) and Oscar Mills (10th overall in his Oppie). To see all the results click here. The kayak and swimming races were held back at Snowhill where the judges were called on to make some difficult decisions, especially in the adult races! The event ended with "Crepes on the Green" which proved extremely popular with all.

JW Part 2 Report

Junior week 2, attended by 40 teens in Toppers, Lasers and Fevas, didn't have quite the same uninterrupted sunshine, but still managed to have 4 full days of sailing.

The winner of the race group overall was Tate Kump (below), showing off the skills he's gained from sailing on the Topper circuit. Second place went to Jake Teece, followed by Charlie Benda both in Toppers. Luke Hill-Norton was the first placed Laser and Jemima Firmstone and Tabitha Smith the first Feva. Full results available here.

It was great to see the enthusiasm for racing and rapidly improving standards shown by the juniors. The evening socials were also a definite hit, as was the sail away to Cobnor enjoyed by the 15+ group.

A huge thank you to the instructor group and also all the volunteers who made these events possible.
