Harbour Wildlife Awareness Week 7-13th June
Published 08:27 on 28 May 2023
As sailors, paddle boarders, walkers and swimmers who get so much enjoyment from the Chichester Harbour we need to do all that we can to protect the local environment. There is an amazing variety of wildlife and it is important that our activities do not disturb such animals as seals and nesting birds. Each year in Chichester Harbour we use the Wildlife Awareness Week to promote greater understanding of these issues.
This year the Harbour Federation (i.e. the Harbour's sailing clubs and other organisations) are also running a Wildlife Photo Competition which WWSC is supporting. Click here for more information.
Chichester Harbour Conservancy have produced 2 awareness leaflets:
- The Solent Seals Code of Conduct - how not to cause distress when viewing these fantastic animals
- Enjoying paddle sports and protecting the environment - how to explore the Harbour without disturbing its wildlife
Please take time to read them and help protect the wildlife and biodiversity, especially at this time of year when there are breeding birds and later in the summer seal pups.
The Green Blue Campaign of the RYA and British Marine provides lots more information on how we can all reduce our impact on the marine environment. You can read all about the ongoing work to protect and recover nature within Chichester Harbour here.
