Optimists (and SailQubes)

Optimist dinghies and the many plastic variations based on their design are ideal boats for young children to learn in. The Optimist is the world's biggest junior class and is most suitable for sailors between 6 and 12 years old but is sailed fully competitively up to 14 or 15 years old. At the 2016 Olympics, 85% of medalists started competing in an Optimist.

The club has 10 SailQubes (based on the Optimist but simpler and more robust) that we make available to members. We strongly encourage new members to start off by renting these types of boats so you can find out if your children like sailing before committing to the cost of buying your own. Not only will this save you money but it helps reduce pressure on the limited Club boat storage space - especially if you are tempted by a cheap second hand "Oppie" that isn't really in a fit condition for use in our sailing courses. At just £12 per day you can use boats that come well-maintained, have proper insurance and the requisite Chichester Harbour licences.

For more information on renting Club boats visit the "Renting Club Sailing Dinghies" page.

Alongside the Club's fleet of 10 boats, we have built up a fleet of around 20 privately owned boats and the number of children sailing them regularly is growing. Our informal weekend sailing squad features these SailQube/Oppie type boats and will be expanded to include others if there is enough demand. They are suitable for sailors from age 6-14, weighing 25-45kg.

Contact Jen Watkins (see Members Directory) for further information.
