RYA Training Courses at WWSC

In 2017 WWSC became an accredited RYA Training Centre and is now able to offer a range of courses which form part of the RYA's Youth Sailing Scheme. More information on the Youth Sailing Scheme and the different stages within it is provided below.

This season we have scheduled three 3 day "RYA Training" events which are shown in the calendar. The dates of these are:

  • July 16th – 18th (Book here)
  • August 13th – 15th (Book here)
  • August 28th- 30th (Book here)

These events will be based around the different stages within the Youth Sailing Scheme and involve more structured instruction and learning. Children taking part in these events will be able to develop a record of their progress using a log book provided for this purpose and which will be available from the club.

Please note that we are only planning to run RYA qualification courses during the above 3 series. We are not planning to run RYA courses within other Junior Programme events such as Junior Week, the Feva Training in May and the 'after school' sessions in June and July. All of these events are described elsewhere on the web site.

What does the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme involve?

The table below provides a brief summary of the different stages within the Youth Sailing Scheme.

Skills developed during the course

Type of Boat

Stage 1

A basic understanding of how a boat sails, with some experience of steering and handling the boat.(Suitable for beginners)

Oppie or Topper

Stage 2

A range of sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor, ability to tack and control speed.

Oppie or Topper

Stage 3

Rigging, launching, recovery and sailing a triangular course. Capsize recovery, sailing theory.

Oppie or Topper

Stage 4

Sail a double handed boat as crew or helm, and solve a variety of problems afloat.

RS Feva

At this point we cannot state definitely which courses will be offered on which date as this will be dependent on demand. However, based on interest expressed so far, it should be possible to run Stages 1,2 & 3 during each of the three weeks advertised.

Beyond Stages 1-4 there are a variety of Advanced Modules which WWSC also hopes to offer based on demand. These include:

  • Sailing with Spinnakers: this will involve an introduction to asymmetric sailing using the club Fevas
  • Start Racing: an introduction to racing tactics and techniques
  • Seamanship: a broad ranging course which is useful for those wanting to assist with the running of the Junior Programme as an AI or DI. We plan to run this as part of the DIP week for 16 + sailors.

More information on all of the courses is available from the RYA here
