The Witterings, Bracklesham Bay, Birdham and Itchenor played a very important role in preparations for the D Day landings of 6 June 1944. From 1941 right through to D Day many hundreds of British, Canadian and international troops were stationed locally. Operation Fabius III, one of the biggest rehearsals for the D Day Landings, took place in Bracklesham Bay and across the peninsula. After the rehearsals the troops embarked for the D Day landings many never to return.
