Handicaps

Your Club's Handicap Committee has determined the following Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) numbers (see table below) to be used at the start of the 2017 racing season.

The RYA's published list of PY numbers is based on results submitted from clubs across the country, including many whose conditions are dissimilar to those experienced in Chichester Harbour. Therefore, we have adopted the RYA's recommendation to adjust the published PY numbers to take account of local conditions. The following PY numbers have been derived from results submitted over the past 6 years from 7 clubs (including WWSC) that regularly race in Chichester Harbour in mixed fleets (handicap racing). We believe this is the best representative data set on which to base our handicaps, with the aim of achieving fair and competitive handicap racing. For those boats for which data isn't available, such as the Flying Dutchman and Gull, 'historic' PY numbers are used.

The Handicap Committee intends to review the racing results for the first half of the season and make changes to PY numbers, if warranted, prior to the start of Regatta Week, which will then be valid for the rest of the season. A new list will therefore be published by 5 August 2017.

Notes:

  1. The above analysis uses the results produced by the RYA's PYOnline system. The RYA uses this system to calculate the PNs based on the race results submitted by sailing clubs throughout the UK.
  2. Columns 4 to 7 in brown, show the PY numbers calculated by the PYOnline system for the West Wittering Sailing Club alone using race results going back to the 2010 season. Also shown are the number of races and the total number of boats that were used to calculate the PY number along with the confidence factor, that is a measure of the PY number's accuracy.
  3. Columns 8 to 11 in yellow, show the PY numbers calculated by the PYOnline system for all the clubs in Chichester Harbour (that submit their results to PYOnline) including WWSC.
  4. Colum 12 in blue shows the RYA PN for 2017 where there is one.
  5. Column 13 in grey, shows the historic RYA PN for those classes that no longer have sufficient results to justify appearing in the current RYA PY Number list.
  6. Column 14 in green, shows the PY Number WWSC will use for the 2016 season (subject to review mid-season).
