Junior Week 2018
Junior week this year will run from Wednesday 25th-Sunday 29th July. We have a fantastic programme lined up for all our sailors from 8-15 years. The week will be run by our Senior Instructor Finn Western, who has many years of sailing at WWSC and elsewhere.
Included in the instructor team this year, are some of our newly qualified DIs, plus those who have several years of experience working at WWSC.The full team will be: Finn Western, Sam Hall, Ellie Hardy, Anna Cope, Miranda Williams, Georgie Drysdale, Georgie Ramsay, Sasha Arnell-Smith and Fergus Bonar.
Getting the Fevas ready for 2018: (from left to right) Alys Turner (Feva Class Capt.), Abbie Turner (DI), Ellie Hardy (DI), Miranda Williams (DI), Ollie Bonar (SI), Fergus Bonar (DI) & Finn Western (SI)
As ever, Junior Week is about having fun on the water for competent helms and involves some racing and destination sailing. While we expect everyone taking part to build and develop their sailing skills, the week is not based around formal instruction and is therefore not suitable for beginners. All Junior Week participants must have the competence and confidence to sail between Snowhill and East Head independently before taking part .
Younger children with less experience will sail mainly in the waters around East Head improving skills through games and competition on the water and hopefully completing a destination sail to Ellanore or Pilsey if conditions allow.
For older children with more experience, the programme offers more challenge with the opportunity to explore more of Chichester Harbour through racing and destination sails to locations such as Hayling Island or Itchenor. For the most able children destination sailing may involve going further afield exploring the Harbour Entrance and the Chichester Bar, Fowley Island, Bosham or even into Langstone Harbour. Obviously all of this is weather dependent!
We are aware that many children like to sail with their friends and really enjoy the social aspect of sailing. Wherever possible, we will endeavour to keep friends together in the same sailing group, assuming their sailing ability is of a similar standard. However, the final choice for this will remain at the discretion of the Senior Instructor.
