Lasers

The beauty of the Laser class is the simplicity of the design and the flexibility it offers to helms regardless of age, weight, ability or bank balance. No wonder the Laser is the world's most successful dinghy used throughout the world both for fun and for racing, right up to Olympic level.

At West Wittering the Laser class usually provides the core of our adult racing fleet with ages of helms ranging from 16 to sailors in their 70s. During Regatta Week numbers are generally in double figures whilst we have also run a Laser group for older teenagers as part of Junior Week.

A key advantage of the class is the opportunity for helms to choose different rig configurations. This is achieved by using three different sail sizes (each of which comes with a specific lower mast section).

Laser 4.7 is the smallest of the three and provides a good transition from a Topper, or for a lightweight helm. Recommended helm weight 35-55kg.

Laser Radial this is the most popular configuration at West Wittering and is used as the Olympic singlehanded class for women. Recommended helm weight 55-70kg.

Laser Standard this is the men's Olympic singlehanded class. Recommended for helms weighing 65kg +.

Lasers are neither modern nor sophisticated but their simplicity and the strict regulation of the class as a 'one design' means that competitive sailing in the class tends to be more evenly matched than most.
