Junior Events

Parents of junior members who participate, unaccompanied, in club racing events are required to sign a standard declaration form.   This arrangement is something which is strongly recommended by the RYA and those of you who have sailed elsewhere will be aware that every other club in Chichester Harbour operates a similar policy. We have tried to make our approach to this as straightforward as possible:

  • The form only needs to be signed once, it will then be kept on file in the clubhouse for the duration of the 2010 season
  • You do not need to sign the declaration if the junior member is sailing with you nor with another responsible adult
  • The declaration is not required for designated Junior events e.g. the Covington Regatta.

We regret that junior members will not be allowed to enter races unless a declaration form has been signed. The committee appreciates  your co-operation with this system and hopes to see many more junior members enjoying club racing this season.

WWSC Junior Week 9th –13th August

We’ve got at a week of fantastic high tides in the creek and so with fingers crossed for good weather we should be set for another good Junior Week.
Last year we had nearly 40 children taking part. This is great but it does mean that we have to pay a bit more attention to planning and organisation.  In particular it means:

  1. Insisting parents sign up their kids well in advance
  2. Allocating all parents duties to perform during the week so everything goes smoothly

Working with the same group of young coaches who ran last year’s programme we aim to run a variety of sailing activities. It is not a formal course but some instruction will be provided, we plan to run a few races and for the more confident sailors to do at least one ‘destination sail’  e.g. to Pilsey or Thorney Island.  We also hope to have a number of social activities though this really depends on parents coming forward with ideas.

All children who are keen to sail are welcome to take part, but with a range of abilities we need to group kids of similar ability together.  You’ll need to tell us which group your child should be in on the registration form.

We aim to divide the kids up into three groups as follows:

Sausage group

Inexperienced and beginner sailors, would need help to get sail to East Head

Triangle Group

Basic skills, able to tack and gybe
Confident enough to sail to East Head on their own

Race Group

Can sail a triangular course competently, looking to enhance racing skills and explore more of the harbour

From experience it helps us to spend the first day with just the beginners (the sausage group). So they will start on the Monday with a day to themselves. Everyone else will start on the Tuesday.

We need parents to help run Junior Week. There are two types of duty we need to cover:

  1. crews will be needed for each of the club’s three patrol boats
  2. A beach based ‘uber parent’ to collect names and the start of the day and be a point of contact on East Head.

Please remember that we are not providing a child minding service and if your child is unhappy, does not want to sail etc we expect you to deal with it and for that reason we insist that all children have a responsible adult in the vicinity of the creek while sailing with us.
